Description and Requirements

This microcredential applies Python programming and the OpenSees finite element software framework to linear and nonlinear analysis of frame structures. The target audience is engineering professionals who want to further their knowledge of nonlinear structural analysis and automate their structural analysis workflows, as well as graduate students who want to learn the fundamentals of nonlinear structural analysis for research and professional preparation.

CE 535 and 536 can be taken at the same time, then CE 537. Starting in 2027 students will be able to complete the microcredential within two terms if they begin in summer. Schedule for offering courses twice throughout the year:

Spring 2026
CE 535E

Summer 2026
CE536E

Fall 2026
CE537E

Winter 2027
CE535E

Spring 2027
CE536E

Summer 2027
CE537E (End of 2nd series)
CE535E (Start of 3rd series) –
CE536E (3rd series, can be taken in parallel with CE535E)
Yes

Students should have an undergraduate degree in civil or mechanical engineering, or an equivalent course in indeterminate structural analysis.

Skills

Structural analysis
CE 536 and CE 537
Nonlinear structural response
CE 537
Python programming
CE 535, CE 536, CE 537

- Finite element analysis (CE 536, CE 537)
- Numerical methods (CE 535, CE 536, CE 537)
- Linear algebra (CE 535, CE 536, CE 537)
- Software verification (CE 535, CE 536, CE 537)

Strategic Plan

Increase online-only enrollment to 30,000 by 2030. Offering a new online graduate microcredential will bring in new students looking to upskill, and will also create a pathway for a stackable credential into our graduate Civil Engineering program.

Alternative Summative Assessment

Alternative Summative Assessments (ASA) are a substitution for the committee-driven oral exam present in most MA/MS degrees. The ASA should provide similar insights as the oral exam into the program and graduate learning outcomes.
