English Graduate Major (MA)

The School of Writing, Literature and Film offers graduate work leading to a Master of Arts degree in English. The major area of concentration may be literature and culture; rhetoric, writing, and culture; or film and visual studies. Graduate work in the school may also be applied to a Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies degree or to minors in other advanced degree programs.

Upon successful completion of the program, students will meet the following learning outcomes:
MA: Rhetoric and Writing
- Conduct research or produce some other form of creative work.
- Demonstrate mastery of subject material.
- Conduct scholarly or professional activities in an ethical manner.
- Explain, evaluate, and practice divergent pedagogical methods.
- Describe rhetoric contextually and/or comparatively.
- Historicize and theorize emerging forms of composition and expression.
MA: Literature and Culture Film
- Conduct research or produce some other form of creative work.
- Demonstrate mastery of subject material.
- Conduct scholarly or professional activities in an ethical manner.
- Contextualize contemporary literature and/or film in a long continuum.
- Describe literature and/or film in terms of major periods, practices, and genres.
- Evaluate the significance of individual works in their cultural and intellectual contexts.
