Music Undergraduate Major (BA, BS, HBA, HBS)
This program is available at the following location:
- Corvallis
Option available: Music Production
This program provides a music studies preparation for students interested in music applications outside of music education, pedagogy, and performance. It is also designed for those students interested in a double major, combining music skills and knowledge with other areas, such as engineering, business, biological sciences, pre-law, or other disciplines where music studies would augment their specific professional or graduate school pathway. The program provides core courses in music theory, and music history and culture, while allowing the student flexibility in choosing electives that most benefit their specific specialization and career goals. The degree includes one option in Music Production, a program for students interested in music applications involving music technology, production, and recording and editing. Completion of the program will be possible from courses offered at the Corvallis campus, although some online courses may be used to satisfy requirements.
Major Code: 950
Upon successful completion of the program, students will meet the following learning outcomes:
- Demonstrate skills in music theory, aural skills, and keyboard skills at a level of competency sufficient for success in their chosen emphasis.
- Develop pedagogical practices preparing them to demonstrate strategies for effective teaching and facilitating student learning, either as a classroom teacher, a studio instructor or a community arts leader.
- Demonstrate performance skills and an understanding of appropriate performance practices for varied styles, and an application of those competencies in live performance.
- Musically create through composition or music technology.
- Describe the values of music and music education in society and use an understanding of society and technology to engage communities in music making and the support for the arts.
Major requirements are 51 credits, of which 24 must be upper-division. Only 12 credits of MUP courses may be applied toward a degree.
A grade of C– or better is required for all courses used to complete music major requirements. These courses cannot be taken with S/U grading.
Transfer students must demonstrate competency in the areas of music history, music theory, aural skills, and piano skills. Placement examinations in each of these areas must be completed by Wednesday of the first week of classes.
