Linguistics Minor
This program is available at the following location:
- Corvallis
The minor in Linguistics provides students with a basis for the scientific study of human languages. A Linguistics minor offers students who have an interest in language diversity, language documentation, preservation and revitalization the opportunity and skills to deepen their knowledge of the structure and power of languages. By analyzing linguistic structure and identifying patterns of language use from around the world, students develop an understanding of how languages change, how they are used by communities, how they express identity, how linguistic ideologies affect language varieties, and how languages are acquired/learned.
A minor in Linguistics offers a timely accompaniment for any students whose course of study engages with multilingualism and multiculturalism globally, internationally, and/or locally.
Minor Code: A026
Upon successful completion of the program, students will meet the following learning outcomes:
- Apply linguistic analysis to recognize and analyze systematic patterns in languages.

- Synthesize knowledge of linguistic categories, terminology, and theories with lived experiences with language.
- Analyze the diversity of languages and how the languages are influenced by sociolinguistic variation, language development, and multilingualism.
- Evaluate concepts, theories, and methodologies used by linguists in qualitative and quantitative analyses of linguistic structure, patterns of language use, and the role of language in social identities.
