Japanese Language and Culture Minor

The Japanese minor is a student-centered, proficiency-based language program that emphasizes communicative competence in real-world settings. It prepares students to interact effectively and appropriately in Japanese across business, educational, and social environments. The program encourages active participation in multilingual communities both locally and in Japan, while fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of Japanese language and culture.

Upon successful completion of the program, students will meet the following learning outcomes:
- Develop proficiency in both spoken and written Japanese.
- Communicate in various different relationships such as with clients, teachers, friends, and family members using appropriate vocabulary, structural patterns, and body languages.
- Analyze the relationships between the culture of Japan and other world cultures.
A total of 30 credits are required, 18 of which must be upper-division courses. 12 out of the 18 credits must be completed in residence with an average grade of C.
