Nutrition and Health Sciences Option
This option is available within the Nutrition major at the following location:
- Corvallis
The Nutrition and Health Sciences option is designed for students who want to focus on the scientific basis of nutrition for careers in medicine and the health sciences or in nutrition science research. Tracks within the option allow students to specifically focus and prepare for careers in medicine and the allied health sciences or for academia and/or health-related research. Professionals trained in nutrition science have many career options due to the growth and aging of our population, the focus on prevention of obesity and other chronic diseases, and a growing emphasis on health, nutrition, and wellness.

Upon successful completion of the program, students will meet the following learning outcomes:
- Explain the methods by which public health identifies potential causes of population health status and identifies potential targets for interventions.
- Outline key determinants of health as well as strategies for health promotion and prevention of premature disease or disability.
- Locate, interpret, evaluate and use evidence-based literature in critical thinking activities.
- Use current information technologies.
- Demonstrate effective and professional oral and written communication.
- Identify food sources for obtaining adequate nutrients across the life span.
- Recall how race, gender, age, socioeconomic status and body size influence nutrition-related health disparities across the lifespan.
