Human Services Option
This option is available within the Human Development and Family Sciences major at the following locations:
- Corvallis
- Ecampus
- OSU-Cascades
Students pursuing an HDFS Human Services Option explore collaborative, strengths-based methods to resolve individual, family, and community problems. They develop cultural competence to engage in ethical helping practices that promote human dignity, social justice, and empowerment. They also learn effective helping skills such as empathy, rapport building, and active listening. Students gain an understanding of the social and human service delivery systems and two internship experiences are required for degree completion.
Students will be prepared to pursue career and graduate work in HDFS and aligned fields such as counseling, marriage and family therapy, social work, nonprofit administration, and other behavioral and social sciences.

Upon successful completion of the program, students will meet the following learning outcomes:
- Apply relevant theory and research to culturally-responsive, evidence-based practices with individuals, families, or communities.
- Explain how ecological contexts reinforce systems of privilege and oppression in which individuals and families develop.
- Apply equity, inclusion, diversity and social justice principles in practice with individuals, families and/or communities.
- Critically evaluate policies, programs, and practices with relevance to the wellbeing of all individuals and families.
