Food Manufacturing Minor
This program is available at the following location:

The Food Manufacturing minor introduces students to several engineering and operations concepts. A key component of the minor is a three-month manufacturing internship at a food processing facility. Prior to the internship, students will work within the department’s pilot plants, producing at least one of cheese, beer, wine, liquors, or fruit and vegetable products.

Upon successful completion of the program, students will meet the following learning outcomes:
- Explain the basic steps involved in production of cheese, beer, wine, distilled spirits, or a fruit/vegetable product.
- List functional activities of manufacturing operations.
- Describe manufacturing layout and 'Just-in-Time' approaches.
- Apply statistics to improving operational systems.
- Examine management functions and discuss related ethical and diversity issues.
- Calculate economic concepts like time, cost, depreciation, taxes, retirement.
- Describe lean manufacturing techniques related to food manufacturing.
Some of the courses required for the minor have additional prerequisites or grade requirements that are separate from the minor.
