Botany and Plant Pathology Graduate Major (MS, PhD)

The Department of Botany and Plant Pathology offers graduate programs leading to the Master of Science, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in the field of botany and plant pathology.
Within this major field, students may elect to specialize in one of the approved areas of concentration. Areas of concentration are not transcripted and do not appear on a program of study. Students majoring in any one area of concentration may incorporate into their programs minors in other areas within the department or minors in other departments and colleges. Integrated minors, and interdisciplinary programs in plant physiology, molecular and cellular biology, genetics, and environmental sciences are also available.

Upon successful completion of the program, students will meet the following learning outcomes:
MS

PhD

MS
- MS students may choose a thesis or non-thesis pathway.
- For thesis degrees, 45 credits must appear on the program, including 6-12 credits of thesis (BOT 503), and no more than 9 blanket-numbered credits (BOT 50X) other than thesis.
- For non-thesis degrees, 45 credits must appear on the program, including 6 credits of non-thesis research (BOT 501) and no more than 9 blanket-numbered credits (BOT 50X) other than research.
- MS candidates develop their Program of Study in consultation with the major professor.
PhD
- 108 credits must appear on the program.
- A minimum of 36 regular (non-blanket) credits must appear on the program.
- A minimum of 36 thesis credits (BOT 603) must appear on the program.
- No more than 15 blanket numbered credits (BOT 60X), other than thesis, may be included in the 108 credits required for the program.
- PhD candidates must pass a preliminary examination upon completion of their coursework and are required to be a teaching assistant for two quarters.
